A Sound Reality is an internet project based on acoustic ecology* as described in previous research projects and the works of Barry Truax. Much of the informational text is either directly quoted or improvised from the written work of Barry Truax. A Sound Reality also provides a place for me to share my personal interpretations of my own sound environments and experiences.

I am concerned about the affects that sound environments have on communities and on people as individuals. I fear and believe that the increase of noise in our sound environments has the capacity to negatively affect the integrity of communities and our general and psychological health. During the recent years that I have spent at my noisy city apartment, I have become increasingly concerned with the state of our sound environments. I feel that my aural sensitivity is declining and my aural aggravation is rising.

Text in italics represents my own thoughts while the standard text indicates an informational narrative. The ƒ symbol indicates a sound sample. The categories of topics are listed on the left or you can navigate page by page using the arrow links below. A complete list of all the sounds used can be found on the Sound Examples page. A bibliography can be found on the Credits page.

* Acoustic Ecology is the study of the relationship between individuals and communities and their environment. Acoustic ecology is the study of the effects of the acoustic environment, or soundscape, on the physical responses or behavioral characteristics of those living within it.
